Chad Coleman took home first place in TAG Cornwall's juried exhibit for his piece titled Spellbound, made from cut paper. The awards were handed out on Saturday, April 6, 2013.
After five months in the making, a first place award for his artwork was
welcome encouragement for Chad Coleman. It was Coleman's second year participating in TAG Cornwall's annual juried exhibit, but his first time taking home honours, which were doled out in a ceremony on Saturday.
Sylvie Lizotte, executive director of the Pitt Street gallery, said the judges were thrilled with Coleman's piece, calling it "masterful," "It's well presented, too."' she said.
Coleman said he's been doing paper cutting projects for a few years now, but set his sights on a new challenge for the showcase. "I wanted to push the boundaries of where I could go with paper cutting."' he said.
Over the course of five months, he drew, cut and layered paint on the piece that now hangs at the gallery It's motivating."' he said of the award that hangs below it . "It's encouraging".
Coleman, also known for his musical interests, has been working with bristle board paintbrushes for about three years now. "It's still a little fresh." he said". I have a small body of work."
Coleman said the projects try his patience at times but he's always thankful when he looks at the completed piece. "It's rewarding when I finish." he said. And with an award now on his resume, Coleman said he'll be even more motivated to hone his skills. I'm definitely moving forward with this." he-said . "It's another place to build from."'
