Alpacas are originally from South America, specifically the mountain plateaus of Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. For the past 6,000 years, they have been domesticated for their fleece. Here are some the more important facts:
Alpacas are cornelids. related to the even rarer vicuna, the llama and the camel.
Due to their padded feet, they do not cause damage to their
pasture. They require less room than other livestock. (3 to 8 alpacas per acre depending on where you live)
They are low maint~nance livestock. Aside from shearing once a year, trimming their teeth and toenails occasionally, they
require very little care.
They make communal "poop piles," making clean up quick and easy. Manure is low in nitrogen so it does not burn the vegetatoin as does other fresh manures.
They begin to breed at 18 months and have a gestation period of 11 to 12 months.
As a rule, they only have their young during the day - between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m .. Usually, the young, called crio. are up and running
after about 30 minutes. Twins are very rare.
They communicate by humming and sound an alarm cry when predators are spotted. They spit - at each other when annoyed or when the female lets the male know she's already bred. (called spitting off>
Females are induced ovulators, which means breeding stimulates ovulation. Males will "orgle" while breeding - they rub the females front quarters with their front legs while making an unusual grunting sound.
Features of Alpaca Comforters or Duvets
Why use Alpaca fibre? The fibre is stronger, softer and lighter than sheep's wool, and draws moisture away from your body, so you don't feel sweaty. These duvets use 1000/0 alpaca, and require less fill to keep you warm. For those who cannot tolerate down (feathers), it is a perfect alternative comforter fill. Synthetic materials used on typical comforters and bedding do not breathe and can emit toxic fumes as they age - affecting sleep and breathing.
Alpaca fibre is dust mite and fire resistant (smoulders). Dust mites have a difficult time establishing a home in alpaca fibre because of the fibre's dry,
porous nature. Dust mites prefer to live in foam, polyester and some down products and are one of the leading causes of asthma and allergies in the bedroom. In addition, many people who are allergic to feathers or synthetics have no reaction to these fibre duvets and claim to have a more restful sleep.
Alpaca fibre is hypoallergenic , as it is very clean and dry. This fibre is grown without herbicides in a stress free environment and the animals are not dipped in pesticide baths. No chemicals, dyes or bleaches have been used during the processing. This fibre does not contain lanolin or grease. The fibre has been cleaned with natural products and is not chemically treated. These comforters are available in: twin, double, queen or king sizes. A reusable 100% un bleached cotton, drawstring bag is included for easy storage.
Alpaca Poo
Alpaca manure is a time saver. If you garden or landscape, you know how important good, nutritious soil is. You also know how hard it is to find, and how long it takes to compost!
Well, look and wait no longer! Alpaca poo is the low nitrogen, low odour wonder fertilizer you've been dreaming of. These tiny, pebble-like droppings are the newest thing in fertilizer. They can be mixed in with your current soil, or simply thrown on the surface for the rain to break down.
And the best part is .. there's no prior composting required!
Also, alpacas have a very thorough digestive system. This ensures that a very limited amount of unwanted" stow-away" seeds escape to your garden, decreasing
your weed population.
Benefit of Low Nitrogen Fertilizer
Since alpaca manure is low in nitrogen you can mix it right in with your soil, and plant anything you want in it without worrying about burning the roots!
Pricing starts at $5.00 per five Ibs bag.
