Choir director Brian Hubelit hopes to rustle up interest in a combined choir to present John "The Crucifixion" on Good Friday

CORNWALL - A local choir director has hopes of reviving a musical treasure from time's past. Brian Hubelit, musical director of Trinity Anglican Church and Chorus Novus, was approached earlier this year by one of his singers, Steve Ellam, with an idea to present John Stainer's "The Crucifixion" by a combined choir on Good Friday. Ellam wasn't sure how the suggestion would be received, but he found encouraging support in it.

Now it's just a matter of getting the warm bodies - and vocal chords - for the April presentation at Trinity Anglican Church. "Steve told me that it's' been a number of years since it was done in Cornwall,'' ยป Hubelit said . "He asked if it might be a possibility.
"I thought it was good suggestion."

Stainer (1840-1901) composed the oratorio in 1887. He was considered to be one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation, and in 1872 he was appointed organist of St. Paul's Cathedral. He was an Oxford, professor and was renowned for his scholarship as a researcher and editor of early music.

"The music is not sung as much these days, but there are many longtime singers around
who would like the opportunity to sing it again," continued Hubelit. "The presentation will be as much for the singers' benefit, as it will be for the audience's benefit, " No auditions are required, however, the ability to read, music or be familiar with the
selections is definitely a bonus.

There have already been two rehearsals, said the director. A minimum number of 25
are required for the presentation, including male soloists. We're looking for voices, all brands,'' he says. "There's about a half-dozen chorus numbers, quite a number of male solos. I estimate the whole work 50 minutes to present, and proportion of chorus and pieces are about equal.''

What makes the piece also attractive is the audience participation component. It is written in English, an it also contains several hymns which the audience is invited to sing, too.
"Many people can remember God So Loved the World,'' which is one of the sections, he said. ''It is probably the most popular selection in The Crucifixion.''
