Vicky Phillips grew up in Akwesasne and learned basketmaking from her mother-in-law, Agnes Phillips, and master basketmaker Mary Adams. She went on to take basketmaking classes at the Akwesasne Museum where she learned the entire basketmaking process “from tree to finished basket.”
Known for her creativity and brilliant use of colors, Vicky makes many traditional baskets like her miniature strawberry baskets but also likes to experiment with different shapes, especially baskets woven around glass containers: “You give me a jar and I’ll weave it.” Vicky can transform even mayonnaise jars into beautiful woven vases. Recently she developed a Christmas tree ornament woven from ash with pineapple curls.
