Theresa Angus loves making baskets, “I could do it all day.” Her grandson usually wakes her up in the morning and she starts making baskets “till suppertime.”
When Theresa Angus was grown up at Akwesasne, she would help her mother, Josephine Angus, split and scrape the pliable black ash into thin strips for weaving. Sometimes, she would make colorful bookmarks out of the leftover splints. She also picked sweetgrass with her mother and learned how to prepare and braid the fragrant material for weaving.

Today, she is an accomplished basketmaker making a range of beautiful fancy baskets from 3 to 6 inches and using a variety of traditional Mohawk weaves like thistle, pineapple and popcorn in a range of colors from purple, burgundy to green. She also likes to make Christmas bells made out of ash.
