Denise Jock has been making fancy baskets for over twenty years. I-Icr mother, Sarah Thompson, was a talented fancy basketmaker from Akwesasne and Denise remembers “growing np around baskets.”
She specializes in miniature baskets, 2 inches in diameter. Using a very tiny basket mold, Denise weaves her delicately prepared ash splints into small strawberries and pineapples. Denise likes to use ash that is very white becanse it “takes the dye better” which gives her baskets beautiful color.
Growing up at Akwesasne, her mother also taught her boxy to pick, prepare and braid swcctgrass, which benise uses on her baskets for its sweet and long-lasting fragrance.
