While growing up at Akwesasne, instead of going out to play, Annabelle Oakes remembers staying in and helping her grandmother make baskets. “I just stuck with it,” she explains. Her handsome baskets include fruit baskets, like the strawberry (of special significance to the Haudenosaunee), melon baskets, knitting baskets and sewing baskets with lots of sweet grass. Like many other basketmakers at Akwesasne, Annabelle Oakes is also an accomplished quilter and has made many quilts, which she gives to family and friends.
