Thompson's arts involvement mostly involved set designing and building, starting with Cornwall's Little Theatre in 1960.
He then devoted his skills to St.Columban's productions of The Sound of Music and The King and I.
Back with CLT, he designed 12 sets between 1966-1979. He was president of CLT and Glen Productions.
One of his biggest accomplishments was as stage manager for Dark of the Moon, involving 120 high school students. It was performed at the NAC, earning the Ottawa Journal head- line, 'Cornwall players far from amateur.'
He went on to direct six plays, earning an EODL best director award and best set design for A Taste of Honey.
Thompson continued in following years to direct Cabaret productions and building sets with Glen Productions, and volunteered to save the Capitol Theatre.
