Making baskets can renew an individual’s ties to family and community. Although Connie Sunday grew up watching her mother make baskets, she didn’t take up the art until many years later, when she began taking classes at the Akwesasne Museum.
Connie Sunday likes to make miniature baskets, rising beads and porcupine quills to decorate the lids. Her small sewing baskets are decorated with hand-braided sweet grass. Prized by basketmakers for its pliability and fragrance, sweet grass grows wild at Akwesasne. Like many basketmakers, Connie Sunday is also an accomplished seamstress and has made regalia outfits for her three grandchildren, as well as scores of quilts for family members.
