COLLECTORS OF OUR AREA
A column by Marie Morrell
Meet Luc Caron of Cornwall
Luc has been my hairdresser for many years now. He has his own business, ''Nice Hair Touch Studio''. Usually before I do an interview I give people a list of questions so they can think about what they would like to tell me. In Luc’s case, I really got lucky. He wrote his own article and I sure did not mind. So I will let Luc introduce himself.
“I am originally from Montréal and a second generation of hair stylists. I came to Cornwall over twelve years ago because my wife Amy’s family lives here. I have a son whose name is Loïc. This name is from the old French and according to the meaning of the babies’ name means “famous warrior”. My son and I are Montreal Canadians hockey fans.
I guess growing up in my dad’s shop and appreciating his love for doing hair and collecting antiques gave me the same inclination. I remember that my Dad owned a curling iron so old that to heat it up, people used to put it on the wood stove.
As a hair stylist and a barber you are inevitably exposed to all the tools of the trade. Therefore, it was natural to be attracted to their history and evolution. For me, possessing pieces of the hair styling history is exciting and inspiring.
I have been collecting for over 20 years, about as long as I can remember. My first piece was an old blower Handy-Hannah from the 50s, my Mom gave me. This is the piece I am most proud since it made me start my collection; however, to be honest I love them all.
If money was no object, no question about it, I would want an old barber chair or an old barber pole. My father in law, John Moshonas who lives in Lunenberg, has quite a few antiques; he also sells them and is looking forward to be interviewed.
Well Luc, you gave us the wistful desire to return in thought to a former time in life. It will definitely incite the young generation to develop a sense of curiosity and at least appreciate the mementos of our past.
Thank you for sharing your passion for collecting with us.
