Author Nikaiataa holding her niece Kalani.
Local actress and author, Nikaiataa Skidders has self-published a new book titled "Standing Alone". "Standing Alone" is a screenplay about a young woman living in a unique community dealing with the most difficult of times. The heroine is someone many of us can identify with; dealing with loss, grieving, and moving on, are all too often things we deal with on a weekly basis. The idea for the screenplay evolved from several different life experiences she, her family and friends have endured. The seed for this play started as a project in the classroom at UVM. Her professor encouraged her to develop it further into a full screenplay.
Nikaiataa graduated with a Bachelors of Art in Theatre and Film from the
University of Vermont in 2007. Since then she has become a member of the
Vagabond Theatre located in Cornwall and has appeared in several different plays in Cornwall. She has had various roles in "Unexpected Guest", "Noises Off', and "Kingfisher." Nikaiataa will return to acting next year, she is taking time to focus on her writing.
While at University of Vermont, she had originally started as a pre-med
student and took an elective class in acting. She was so taken by this form
of art that she changed her major. She loves how exciting acting can be and
how expressive it is. Writing is another form of expression, and she has several screenplays in the works as well as a novel.
She encourages young writers to stay focused and to explore the different
types of media that are now available to become published. There is e-publishing: where a book is sold online and not in hard cover. Also, there is self-publishing: in which the author submits a piece for review and if accepted, there are several ways to prepare the book for professional publication. Many self- publishing firms also offer marketing
The book is available on Amazon.com and at the Brass Xlibris.com
